The Lubricant Lab: Measuring Viscosity with Brookfield Testing

Brookfield viscometers are widely used to measure the viscosity and flow properties of lubricating oils at different temperatures and shear rates. The results provide key data on oil behaviour.

In the test, the oil sample is placed in a temperature controlled chamber. A spindle coupled to a rotating disk is immersed in the oil. Viscometers measure the torque required to rotate the spindle at different speeds.

By testing across a range of temperatures, Brookfield data gives the viscosity-temperature relationship needed to determine viscosity index. Testing multiple speeds shows non-Newtonian viscosity dependence on shear rate.

Brookfield results help characterize critical factors like an oil’s operating temperature range, thin film viscosity, and flow through tight clearances. This data guides optimal formulation.

At Valorem Chemicals, we leverage Brookfield testing to engineer top-performing engine oils.
