Welcome to The Lubricant Lab – An Inside Look at Engine Oil Technology

Oil has been the lifeblood of engines for over a century, yet much of its science remains mysterious to everyday users. This “The Lubricant Lab” series peels back the layers and provides an insider’s view of the complex chemistry powering modern engine oils.

We’ll explore everything from base stocks to additives that give oil its performance. You’ll learn how tests like Noack volatility and TBN characterize key oil properties. We’ll demystify terminology from viscosity modifiers to ZDDP.

Gain insight into how tailored formulations allow oils to excel in harsh operating environments. Discover how advances continue improving fuel economy, emissions compatibility, and engine longevity. Appreciate the chemistry and engineering behind the motor oil at your next oil change.

Finally, glimpse the dedication and expertise of Valorem Chemicals in custom-formulating the highest quality lubricants. We’re excited to share our passion for the science of engine oils and what goes on “The Lubricant Lab.” Let’s pop the hood and take a deeper dive!

Without further ado, here is our first article:

The Lubricant Lab: Demystifying ZDDP – The Key Lubricant Additive

Engine oil does far more than just lubricate moving parts in your car’s engine. The oil contains a precise blend of base oils and performance additives that work synergistically to protect critical engine components. Without these chemical additives, engines would quickly succumb to wear, oxidation, contamination, and other types of damage.

One of the most important additives used in motor oil is zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, more commonly known as ZDDP. This chemical additive contains zinc and phosphorus compounds that react to form a protective layer on metal surfaces. This film prevents direct metal-to-metal contact between surfaces like bearings and cylinder walls. ZDDP’s protective layer controls friction, minimises wear, and prevents corrosion – helping your engine cope with extreme pressures and temperatures.

Oil additives like ZDDP were developed out of necessity – as engine designs evolved after WWII, new solutions were needed to address increasing demands. ZDDP proved to be a crucial additive that protected and enhanced high-performance engines. While formulations continue to advance, ZDDP remains an integral chemistry in engine oil after over 70 years in use. The science behind additives like ZDDP allows modern engines to safely withstand punishing conditions.

At Valorem Chemicals, we specialise in lubricant additives like ZDDP.
